Our habits, both good and bad, are usually established unconsciously. We do not decide one day to start biting our nails or blinking excessively. There is usually an original purpose or perceived need behind why we started the behaviour. Whilst you may consciously know you want to stop xxxxxxx, something unconsciously is stopping you from making the change and it must happen at the unconscious level for the change to be permanent.
Why you need more than willpower to overcome negative habits
If you try to break your bad habit by conscious thought alone, you will find that your mind does not respond to orders. You might stop yourself biting your nails a couple of times but then find yourself nibbling away without realising. Have a friend tell you every time you do it and you will find this to be true! You might reach the point where you give up and just say, “I just can’t help it!”
You are right, on your own, but with skilled hypnosis we can discover whether you still need the habit or I might suggest that you replace the unwanted habit with a more acceptable or appropriate behaviour.
There are separate pages on this site about the bad habits of smoking and overeating.
